My doodle bug setup

Postby sudurrant » Sat Aug 15, 2009 9:55 am

Well my (oops, my daughter's ;) ) Doodle Bugs arrived yesterday. They have been introduced to their new home and seem to be settled in. They have already had their first meal of midgy flies caught in a butterfly net. There don't seem to be any ants around here at the moment - to cold I guess! I made their habitat from a large cookie jar I already had and so far this seems to work well. They have around 13 x 15 cm surface area to the washed river sand and I planted a small sword grass (grows native on my block) and put in a weathered stick for decoration. The sword grass I dug up then put the root ball into a square of calico and tied at the plants base to prevent dirt getting through the sand. It should have plenty of water from the once a week misting. The cookie jar proves to make it quite easy to watch them. The opening is on the side so you can look straight into the habitat at ground level. I've just put a little mesh and a rubber band to prevent anything entering or leaving - possibly not necessary - I'm not sure. I attached some pics.

Wow what an awesome setup. Shows what you can do with a little imagination and a few unused things laying in and around your house.
