seashore winkles!

Postby BillabongBug » Fri Jul 18, 2008 11:57 am

Hello!
Yesterday I was looking at some funny creatures in rock pools on the shore. I was thinking if I would find any winkles. There was a lot of snails and other small animals but no sign of little purplish snails. There was a lot of small bluish snails in big groups on the shore and in the pools but they werent the winkles I was looking for.
And when I was about to go I found something higher on the rocks above sea level. Little groups of snails looking just like teeny weeny winkles but much bigger! I was happy to find them but Then I started wondering are they the same thing and will my winkles also grow so big? I took two with mee. I don't know if I should but I wanted to show them to you guys and they looked asleep. So there they are:

This picture shows two seashore winkles compared to my teeny weeny winkle. The one in the middle had a wet shell that's why he is darker.

And I couldn't resist so I plopt the winkles to a new, bigger tank, which is waiting for sea dragons. They came to life instantly and started to look around ther new home :) .

But I forgot that the new tank doesn't have the sea salt that comes with the winkles. It just has the sea formula. So I am wondering if they are going to bee fine. :?

Oh and their probalby called Tubercled Noddiwink but there isn't much about them on the web.

Well as U.B. has stated, after they get a full foot... Um full stomach, they like to climb to a nice high point and 'sleep' it off. I think of my little Winkles as algae lions. I jokingly call them this because it reminds me of how a lion eats until he can't eat any more and then goes to find somewhere to sleep it off.

So it only makes sense to me that they climbed up higher than most of the other snails having developed a method that allows them to enter a semi-stasis rather than to just rest while they wait for the tide to come back in. I think it would be neat to add a few big brothers and sister to a larger salt water tank with other inhabitants. Kind of like a common bond between my tiny tanks and larger tank.

As usual my insatiable curiosity for all things LAP has lead me to get searching. There is very little information, so like so many of the items only found here at Little Aussie Products, the animal is something of a specialized animal to OZ. What did I find out? Well lets start with the basics.

After a little run with the belief these guys are called Tubercled Noddiwinks I came to this information:
The scientific name is suspected to be Nodilittorina pyramidalis off of a comparison of living specimens to data stored and documented in archives. That led me to find information HERE.

That was a little more fuel on the fire. But I didn't know for sure. I checked the OP's pics and verified what I was looking at myself. OK, now I was hooked, that is definitely what I have in my tank showing off with the Sea Monkeys. But I need to see what else I can find. Sadly speaking only one language I restricted my search to only the English language. That lead me to HERE. That was even better, just a little more information, but still no where near enough. There is so much information that is completely missing from these pages.

So now this brings me to you! Can you help us with gathering information on this sweet little creature? I am personally placing a shout out to all you Budding scientists, established and notarized scientists, biologists, marine biologists, animal lovers and Teeny Weeny Winkle fans. Help me learn more about my beloved little snails. I want to give my little guys the best environment I can... A home away from home if you will. Can anyone help me learn more?

My personal thanks,

Russ aka teh Winkle Warrior :D

WOW, giant winkles! You should offer them, John. There are alot more snails out there....
Ahh, a wild puggle. Life is hard as a puggle, you need to cuddle with your friends, you need to have fun with the winkles all the time....
